The Treasure Behind Skógafoss Waterfall
Icelandic legend holds that a Viking settler named Þrasi Þórólfsson once hid his treasure at Skógafoss Waterfall. His ingenious plan involved placing a chest of gold behind the base of the falls, where the force of the waters would protect it. People say that for a long time you could see one end of the chest visible through the waterfall. Once three men from Skógar tried to pull it out, but when they hooked the iron ring it popped right off the chest and they had to abandon their attempt. They left the treasure behind, and allegedly put the ring on the door of the church in Skógar. The ring associated with this legend is held in the collections of the Skóga folk museum.
